Autumn – the year’s last, loveliest smile

We have enjoyed a glorious Indian summer in Paris, lingering well into October, with temperatures in the 20s and bright sunny skies almost every morning.

But the trees know. Shorter days and cooler nights have signalled the changing seasons to them.

Here is one beautiful example from last weekend, in our local parc Monceau. I think this tree in its full autumn livery is a young hornbeam (carpinus betulus), but could be wrong.
carpinus betulus?

And in the parc de Bercy in the 12th arrondissement (where we picnicked last Saturday in summer dresses), a view from the mount at the eastern edge of the park shows – amongst a mass of still-green summer – the distinctive dark red autumnal leaves of a young sweetgum (liquidambar).

We are ready for more.

The leaves are close to peak at Fresh Pond. Last weekend, it was unusually gusty and there were whitecaps on the water. Enjoy your prolonged Parisian ete.

How nice to hear from you again. Actually, since I posted this, the weather has turned dramatically and we are now bundled up against temperatures close to freezing. It feels like we have rushed headlong from summer to winter – but the trees haven’t quite caught up yet, and most are still green. It’s lovely to here that Fresh Pond at least has her autumn colours.

Oh, you mentioned two favorite trees-the Hornbeam and the Sweetgum. Since I haven’t seen a Hornbeam in years, it’s wonderful to see one, so thank you! Here’s to a lovely and colorful autumn!
